Mental health research

Mental health research focuses on understanding various aspects of mental health and mental health conditions. It aims to deepen our understanding of the mind and behaviour, improve diagnostic techniques, develop effective treatments, and enhance overall mental health outcomes for individuals and communities.

Queensland’s dynamic mental health research sector

The mental health research sector is continually advancing and adapting with the aim of improving mental health outcomes. Mental health research in Queensland is supported by leading research institutions, peak bodies and other key local, State, Federal and global organisations. There are several key areas of mental health research, including:

  • the types of mental health conditions and how common they are
  • neurobiological factors contributing to mental health
  • psychosocial factors influencing mental health outcomes
  • the development and evaluation of mental health interventions and treatments
  • mental health service delivery and policy implications.

The National Mental Health Research Strategy 2022

The National Mental Health Research Strategy (2022) highlights that “research is essential for achieving the vision of a mentally healthy Australia.” Rigorous mental health research plays a critical role in deepening our understanding of mental health issues, identifying effective interventions, and improving services. The strategy also emphasises the importance of supporting lived-experience researchers, acknowledging their significant contributions to the field. The strategy includes five focus principles for driving improvements to the mental health research system:

  1. strengthen mental health research
  2. strive for research with impact
  3. support lived experience, collaboration and leadership
  4. embrace a whole-of-life and whole-of-community approach
  5. grow a strong mental health research workforce.
